The CMS Secretariat would like to inform all Parties about the recent progress with regard to the CMS contribution to the development of the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

The Working Group on the CMS Family inputs to the post-2020 framework met for the second time on 18 November 2019in Bonn. The meeting was preceded by an informal meeting on connectivity on 11 November 2019 that included members of the Working Group, the Chair of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas, the Chair of its Beyond Aichi Targets Task Force and of its Connectivity Conservation Specialist Group, the main author of the 5^th Global Biodiversity Outlook, CMS partners,and other experts.

The Working Group reiterated the importance of the active engagement of the CMS Parties, Secretariat and partners in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework to ensure that CMS priorities are well reflected.   

The Working Group reaffirmed the importance of ecological connectivity for the conservation needs of migratory species in the post-2020 framework. In addition, a number of important outcomes emerged, building on the informal meeting on connectivity:

1)     a definition of ecological connectivity,

2)     agreement that connectivity should be reflected in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework as both a stand-alone target, and also integrated into other relevant targets,

3)     a proposal for a stand-alone target and proposals for elements in other targets,

4)     the post-2020 framework should include commitments to international cooperation, and NBSAPs should include reference to other biodiversity-related Conventions.

These are provided to assist Parties in the various meetings and discussions related to the post-2020 process, including those currently taking place at the Twenty-third meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 23) of CBD and the upcoming Thematic Workshop on Area-based Conservation Measures.
