The Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative defined three objectives for sustainable energy and energy access: providing universal access to modern energy services; doubling the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency; and doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

These objectives were based on research from the 2012 Global Energy Assessment, which provides policy-relevant analysis and guidance to governments and intergovernmental organizations, decision-support material to the commercial sector (energy service companies, investors and others), and analysis relevant to academic institutions. It provides technical guidance for implementing measures aimed at mitigating climate change and sustainable consumption of resources. The GEA also showed that the SE4All objectives are achievable and would bring multiple co-benefits.

IIASA Deputy Director General Nebojsa Nakicenovic and IIASA energy researcher Luis Gomez-Echeverri chaired and participated in several sessions of the first day of the forum, on 4 June 2014. The first day of the forum focused on stakeholders’ actions towards making sustainable energy for all a reality. The full day was set aside for showcasing achievements, commitments, innovations, policies, initiatives and concrete plans through a number of parallel sessions and side events.

Advancing Energy Efficiency
On the morning of 4 June, Gomez-Echeverri chaired a session on Energy Efficiency Accelerators, in which Nakicenovic made a statement about the co-benefits of energy transformation. IIASA is a pillar for integrated modeling on energy transformation, providing the research needed to support these global changes.

Knowledge Hub for SE4ALL

Luis Gomez-Echeverri moderated a session, and Nebojsa Nakicenovic spoke as a panelist at a session on the research and academic needed to support the SE4All Initiative. The session included experts from the World Bank and the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Launch of SE4ALL Capacity Building Hub

Nebojsa Nakicenovic spoke as a panelist, along with SE4All Secretary General and CEO Kandeh Yumkella and IPCC Chair Rajenda Pachauri, at the launch of a capacity building hub for SE4All.

REN21 Launch
The Renewables 2014 (REN21) Global Status Report was launched on 4 June as a side event to the Sustainable Energy for All Forum.  IIASA Deputy Director Nebojsa Nakicenovic  is a member of the REN21 steering committee, and participated in the launch. The report provides an overview of the latest developments in renewable energy around the world.

Regional Energy Partnerships

Nakicenovic spoke as a panelist on regional energy integration and SE4All at a side event organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).The side event discussed regional sustainable energy partnerships to complement national efforts to address barriers for renewable energy and energy efficiency markets and investments. The Ambassador of Austria to the United Nations in New York, Martin Sajdik also spoke at the event.
