Our lab was out from Raney nickel (a well working hydrogenation catalyst) so we had to make some.
On the picture there is a few bottles of powdered nickel/aluminium alloy. If we place this alloy into a concentrated NaOH solution the aluminium dissolves and a highly porous nickel remains what is pyrophoric and could be used easily for high pressure hydrogenations.
Did you know that they use Raney nickel based catalyst during the production of margarine?
