The Stockholm Declaration on AI for Science

Declaration

We, an international alliance of scientists spanning diverse fields and disciplines, alongside policymakers, and innovators, acknowledge the profound role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a transformative force in the realm of scientific discovery. AI's ability to process vast datasets, identify patterns, generate hypotheses at unprecedented speeds, and control laboratory automation is revolutionizing our understanding of complex phenomena across various scientific domains.

We believe that by harnessing the power of AI we can propel humanity toward a future where groundbreaking achievements in science, even achievements worthy of a Nobel Prize, can be fully automated. We believe that this is achievable by the year 2050.

With responsible and ethical AI development at the forefront, we pledge to navigate this journey with utmost diligence, ensuring transparency, fairness, and respect for privacy, while upholding the highest ethical standards. We shall prioritize principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, striving to avoid bias and discrimination. We recognize the need for rigorous oversight, accountability, and safeguards against potential misuse.

We commit to using AI in science as a power for good. It should be used to help meet the great challenges the 21st century world faces: climate change, environmental degradation, food insecurity, disease, pandemics, inequality, etc.

We envision a future where AI becomes a powerful tool in advancing knowledge, solving the most challenging scientific questions, and pushing the boundaries of human understanding. We call upon the global scientific community, policymakers, and stakeholders to unite in our commitment to harness AI's potential for the betterment of science and humanity.

Background

From Oct. 3rd to Oct. 6th 2023 a Nobel-Turing Grand Challenge Workshop was held in Rånäs Castle near Stockholm. The Nobel-Turing Grand Challenge aims to develop AI Scientists: AI systems capable of making Nobel-quality scientific discoveries highly autonomously at a level comparable, and possibly superior to the best human scientists by 2050. The Workshop attendees decided to prepare a declaration regarding the ethical application of AI to science.
