The RawMatCop Academy, Copernicus for RawMaterials, offers a hands-on approach and shows how to unlock the power of Copernicus for companies, organisations and research institutions along the entire life cycle of raw materials. During the RawMatCop Academy, participants have the opportunity to work directly with Copernicus’ Sentinel satellite data and open source software to learn how it can be used for:

  • Securing the primary and secondary mineral and material resources needed to transition to a sustainable and circular economy; and
  • Monitoring environmental impact and increasing safety.

Copernicus is the European Union’s Earth Observation Programme, looking at our planet and its environment for the ultimate benefit of all. With the Copernicus programme, satellite data from “the Sentinels” is freely available with a high revisit time. This allows a better understanding of areas of interest at a low-cost and in a non-stop and in a stand-alone way. In this way, Earth Observation (EO) methods contribute to a safe and sustainable supply of mineral resources through improving efficiency of operations and monitoring capabilities of major aspects in the materials value chain such as exploration efficiency, exploitation safety, and waste tracking of mineral resources.
The course combines expert lectures from the industrial and the research communities with hands-on work using case studies to demonstrate Copernicus applications.

Participants will learn how Copernicus can make exploiting primary and secondary raw materials more cost-effective and safer, and can help comply with environmental legislation.

Course topics include:

  • Introduction to Copernicus and Earth Observation data
  • Copernicus’ tools to tackle industrial and societal challenges of raw materials in Europe
  • Optimised ways to monitor environmental impact and increase safety
  • Basics of imaging technology, optical and active remote sensing in the raw materials context, and on the free data and software used in the course
  • Case studies and hands-on exercises organised by theme:
    1. Mineral exploration and mapping of deposits;
    2. Monitoring of mining activities including waste management;
    3. Environmental impact monitoring; and
    4. Stability monitoring
Entrepreneurs and industry professionals from the exploration, mining and processing sectors who are looking for innovative techniques to monitor and manage raw materials in their organisation.

We also welcome geoscientists, development and environmental experts, researchers, master and doctoral students working in the raw materials sector as well as remote sensing practitioners interested in learning raw materials applications.

The Registration process ends on 31 March 2020 (23:59 CET). Participants are limited to 40 and will be selected according to their professional and academic experience, background and motivation to take part in the course.

The selected participants will be contacted by 30 April 2020 and will then receive information on next steps, including transportation and logistics.
